Waypoints will be attending the Red Dress Solidarity Walk hosted by Athabasca Tribal Council and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo at Kiyām Community Park in Fort McMurray, Treaty 8 Territory on Tuesday, May 5th, 2026.
May 5th is recognized as Red Dress Day, the National Day for Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit Plus people. This day calls attention to the ongoing systemic violence impacting Indigenous Peoples across Canada. It also aligns with broader recognition of Missing, Murdered, and Exploited Indigenous Peoples (MMEIP), reflecting the lived and intergenerational impacts experienced within communities.
The walk is centred on honouring families and survivors, while creating space to remember, seek justice, and raise awareness about ongoing violence impacting Indigenous communities across the region and throughout Canada. It also reflects the importance of listening, learning, and showing up with care and responsibility.
This is a space for remembrance, reflection, and connection. All community members are welcome to attend and walk in solidarity. Please note the gathering begins at 12:00 pm with prayers and connection remarks, followed by the walk from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
