Developing and Implementing a Trauma- and Violence-Informed Approach in Digital Media Literacy Education
Presenters from MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital media literacy, will share insights and emerging practices for applying a trauma- and violence-informed lens to digital media literacy education. Drawing from their experience developing the Trauma- and Violence-Informed Facilitation Handbook through the Resilience through DigitalSmarts program, the presenters will walk participants through practical approaches to delivering programming in safe, inclusive, and responsive ways.
While the handbook was designed with a focus on survivors of technology-facilitated violence and abuse, its tools and strategies are relevant across diverse sectors. Whether delivering online sessions, facilitating community education, or adapting existing materials, the guidance offered supports facilitators in building more trauma-informed environments.
For MediaSmarts, integrating a trauma-informed lens was uncharted territory. Presenters will reflect on the process, offering lessons learned and considerations for others navigating similar work.
