Clare’s Law, which came into effect in Alberta on April 1, 2021, helps people at risk of domestic violence access information about a partner’s past behaviours. Named for Clare Wood, who was tragically killed by a former partner, this law offers two tools:
Right to Ask – Individuals can request information from police if they are concerned about a partner’s history.
Right to Know – Police can proactively inform someone at risk if they believe a partner has a history of violent behaviour.
Clare’s Law provides knowledge that can help Albertans make informed decisions about their safety. Waypoints supports anyone seeking resources or guidance related to domestic violence, including how to navigate safety planning or access local services.
